In spite of the daily hardships that prison life presents, Dusty continues to believe that life should have purpose. In the time that he has outside of his cell, he has been a model prisoner and makes every effort to help others as well as try to improve his surroundings

2025 Activities

Dusty has been asked to be the Peer Mentor at Pocahontas. This position requires a mature member of the inmate population who consistently role models pro-social thinking and behavior. The purpose of their presence within the institution is to disrupt criminal logic when engaging with other inmates and demonstrate "correct living" behaviors. They provide stability and support as well as guidance to new inmates and for all inmates needing assistance. In addition, they can serve as a link between staff and the inmate population. They can also function as big brothers and sisters to the entire inmate population. The Peer Mentors are responsible for assisting and maintaining a healthy environment by setting an example in appearance and attitude for others to follow (grooming compliance, proper institutional behavior, etc.). They must be receptive to feedback and willing to provide feedback to others. Peer Mentors facilitate seminars and assist staff/guests with various programs. They are required to meet with mentees on a regular basis and as needed.

Dusty was voted President of the Veteran’s Support Group. Within Pocahontas, there are 25 veterans that he helps provide purpose and structure for, as well as other key activities for the group. Dusty helped write the by-laws for the group and established clear directives for both the mission and purpose of the broader group. They are as follows.

The mission of the PSCC Veteran Support Group is to provide the incarcerated veterans with services and fellowship; to uplift their morale, welfare and recreation; and, to give service to others.

We, the veterans of PSCC come together for the purpose of promoting these services:
~ To share support and experience in addressing veterans' concerns and claims
~ To provide philanthropic service to charities
~ To offer fellowship to all veterans

2024 Organizer of Warrior games a competition that included 50 incarcerated competitors, raising over $1,000 from the incarcerated population for the Gary Sinise Foundation, The Ronald McDonald House- received the Commanders Award and gave a presentation to all competitors
